would that shape work if there was a cylindrical pressure hull inside?

i could make the sub (1ATM) look like anything I want as long as the pressure hull is cylindrical yes?

Here's some About Me info for future reference. It may help in understanding where I am coming from and add some more DEPTH (heh) to the discussion:

I have a fine arts background.

I grew up on the Chesapeake Bay and have worked on the water.

I keep 2 nano reef aquariums.

I like Musclecars and other fast moving bricks.

I run the biggest goth night in the Boston area. (thus the larger than life hair on my frappr photo)

I do mechanical drafting and desktop publishing duties at my dayjob (I am not an engineer though)

I am skilled in;

Pro-Engineer Wildfire (PTC) & Autocad

Adobe Illustrator, Pagemaker, Framemaker, Acrobat etc... I can typically use any graphic or publishing software I am given.

I tend to learn fast once I wrap my head around fundamental concepts.

Bill is correct Patrick, keep that shape ambient. Flat plate design concentrates stressors. There is a section on the PSUB site regarding this issue.

I am not an engineer, but the flat sections of an octagonal hull would not

have as much strength as a round sphere, egg shape, or cylinder.

That is why most 1 atm subs use those shapes.
