RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] acrylic vs polycarbonate

Hi Rick,

Acrylic (Polymethyl Methacylate) has been studied very thouroughly by the
Navy and many other manufacturers. There is plenty of data available on
Acrylyc applications for underwater vehicles which is extremely reliable. I
assume that there is no such data for Polycarbonate yet.

Poly Acetal looks initially promising, due to its great compressive strength.

Here is a nice primer on plastic properties. Note that water absorbtion increases dimensions.

Here are the ASTM references.

Here's a hard clear coating. It might address water exposure too. Dunno.
Ryan and I hit the local U engineering library for the abstract. Curious about using it to seal seacrete. The stuff can dissolve in some depth/temperatures of the ocean. I don't like the idea of dissolving sub hulls. I do like the idea of grown-to-shape 8000psi concrete, though. <: Anybody with Excel want to explore the potential of such spherical seacrete subs? I need the #s for a scifi story I'm writing.
D.
