Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hydraulic
Cylinders Under Pressure
Rick,
You mentioned your rudder controls being
hydraulic cylinders coupled back to back. One acting as actuator and the
other as slave. It's a very simple system and will work fine above
water, but how about when your down deep? Won't the water pressure act on the
area of the ram of your slave cylinder and keep driving it inward?
I was thinking of a similar system to control a
manipulator with. If I do use it, I was thinking I would have to use all
double rod cylinders so there is no differential area between the two sides of
the pistons.
A double rod hydraulic cylinder has a rod
sticking out of each end that is connected to the one common piston.
This design has equal areas on both sides of the piston.
Do you have a better way of over coming the
problem?
