Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] ambient sub trim tank construction

Hi, Joe and ambient fans . . .

I've been putting a fair bit of thought into building a SIMPLE sub the first
time around. Joe, this may be of interest to you in particular.

A while back we had discussed compensating the fore and aft (port and stbd.
if necess.) trim tanks by way of an ambient pressure manifold or line to the
dry cockpit. Well, it's not required. Neither compensating the tanks, nor
the pump housings, nor installing any lines or manifold. Talk about simple
and time-saving.

Considering the miniscule depths we're talking about (less than 100 metres)
all we really need to do is build a one cubic foot tank at either end out of
3/4 ply times two. There is no way on this green earth that one and a half
inches of ply are going to collapse at scuba depths. A rectangular box is
fine.

Here's a link of battery box sealing techniques I contributed way back when:
http://www.psubs.org/pic/batterybox.html They apply to the trim tank
sealing system, as well. Some form of environmentally safe oil would be a
good trim fluid. Avoids the hassle of little germies and scum growing in
there.

All we need is an electrical terminal epoxied into the wall of one of the
trim tanks. The pumps can be located right in the trim tanks themselves.
The pumps would not have to be compensated either.

A one cubic foot tank seven feet forward of the CB would give the equivalent
moment force of (64 lb. X 7) 448 lb. at one foot. Not too bad. A wee bit
overkill, but, effective.

Cheers
Rick L
