Here is my VERY ROUGH conceptual sketch.
It needs a bit of work obviously but it's a starting point at least.
The conning tower is spherical and the sketch 2 hatches, a snorkel, 3
motors, and a cylindical hull with rounded ends. Not in the figure is the
forward view showing the outer/upper hull and ballast protruding from the
sides.
Also note that the curve on the nose was an attempt to capture some boat
like lift at surface (conceptually).
be gentle...

Patrick,
Tricky, but doable so long as the design takes into account the usual
stability considerations, ...ie metacentric height, center of buoyancy,
cg, and the changes of same during the transition. Those hydrofoils did
double duty as ballast.
Take a close look at Proteus at Exomos.com

I had considered hydrofoils. If it has been done then it is obviously
viable.
But I am still wondering if one could simply make larger ballast tanks
and add more positive buoyancy to get more of the sub out of the water.
I have been toying with this on the back burner of my mind and in my
doodles.

Also, the AUV on the orignal XXX did the hydrofoil thing if you
remember... I think it was named Ahab.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Sitting High
Has anyone explored design options that would allow a psub to sit high
on the surface?
I think it would be interesting to try to build a sub that could ride
high and drive on the surfece in a boat-like manner.
Any opinions/input?
