Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Sitting High

9-10 tons seems reasonable if not light for a 40' sub.

That's less than I expected. The concept as sketched* would need to weigh
28-30 Tons which still does not really make me bat an eye other than expense because most work and industrial boats of comparable size are not a whole lot lighter. I think my Uncle's 40' work boat weighs @ 10T and it is primarily wood.

Thanks for the numbers!!!!

[*] 30' x 6' pressure hull with @6' x 4' tower.

Patrick,

I'm down to 14' Length and 36" dia from an original 35'........

Its interesting to watch someone's progression on this forum. I'm particularly interested in yours since, I began with nearly similar desires (a cabin cruiser sized Nautilus based, Victorian Era beauty).

">I don't have any numbers to work with at the moment or anything to
reference
them to even."

Consider a simplistic sample for a moment. Take that 40' length you mention and that skinny little 3' diameter, this forms a cylinder which encloses 283 cubic feet of space.....confirm below.

http://www.csgnetwork.com/volumecalc.html

To submerge this to neutral buoyancy we have no choice but to abide by Archimedes Principle...confirm below

http://www.onr.navy.mil/focus/blowballast/sub/work2.htm

Since seawaters buoyant force is approximately 64 lbs per cubic foot...this means that skinny little tube must weigh 18,112 lbs to submerge. Increase the diameter a bit, and things get real ugly.

I will never forget Paul's words to me....

"So Joe, there is this unpleasant reality of trying to submerge a volume of air".

Bingo! That quote should go in the PSUBS ethos.

Take a look at some of my newest renderings.... http://www.frappr.com/psub

.......and imagine this little pressure vessel dressed up in whatever Victorian or Goth manner you chose to do.

Joe

I think I need to start doing some roughings in Pro-E or something so I can hopefully get weight calculations and a better spacial idea of where I'm going
with my scribbles and flights of fancy.

I don't have any numbers to work with at the moment or anything to reference
them to even.

I'll post some real drawings when I get my concept modeled and y'all can pick them apart. One thing that I'm going to try to get away from is the 3' dia hull. I found it to be a little cramped and worth looking into a larger size. I'd like to be able to stand in the tower
(without wobbling all over) and fit 3 people (6 in my grandiose dreams).

As for riding high; really I am looking for stability and deck surface akin to an ironclad. It'd be nice to be able to pop a few lawn chairs out there and do some fishing! ;D

I am also still curious what you all think of using a sphere as (or as part of) the conning tower.

A lowbot trailer can do up to 60 Ton

Exactly, this is a serious delema. I was just down at our local Harbor, Ventura CA, and was inquireing about a few things, namely cost of boat yard space...$3.00/ ft / day !!! also the overhead crawling crane capacity...165 tons Trying to calculate the weight of a 50' concrete sub 8' dia . does anyone know the capacity of those semi trailers?

Once is is in the water it could be kept on the bottom off shore in a safe area.

All viable solutions, but would definatly make the vessel more than a
weekend toy. And around where i live, the yacht clubs may not allow you to rent dock space for such an "eyesore", regardless of how much it's admired
in this community. (Some of those guys wouldn't even see the beauty in
something like Kraka! can you believe that?)
