The nasty thing about oil compensation is that it can get real messy real fast.  But it is often they
easiest,  cheapest, best method of insuring a seal.  Ive seen a variety of fluids used depending upon the application,
for example you may want to use a different fluid when compensating batteries as opposed to a motor.  You would want
to insure o-ring compatibility though.  Other parameters that you may want to worry about are electrical and thermal conductivity, etc.

Yes, MBARI is really cool.  They also just got a new ROV so maybe you can get some cheap thrusters when they
decommission the old one ;)
