There a laser imaging systems that work well in murky water but I have not seen any affordable units. 

My current choice would be a scanning sonar because it doesn't just tell you something is out there, but it shoes you what it is.  At $6500 this is the most affordable unit I have seen:   http://www.jwfishers.com/scan650.htm

  No expert, but it could be the color of this laser is known to the transmitting electronics...should it strike an object and send a return of differing color? I have used a portable laser thermometer but it too works on majic...we had best let someone in the know answer this one.
 
  The only time I open my mouth at times...is to change feet!

Hi Doug and David. I saw something the other day where a laser was being used as a means of detecting things ahead while traveling in murky water. Got any thoughts on this? Frank D.
