RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hydrophones

Hugh,

One more note as to how well your "dolphin ear" performs...Peter Madson while aboard "Kraka" used a simular unit attached (I think He used tape) to the inside of one of his forward viewports and was able to hear a large yacht start its engines whle His boat was submerged. A more detailed explaination as to how well it performed would be best comming from this man. Shielding was an area of concern to him...
Peter, have you used this device in any further tests?

David,

Yes would like to get a hydrophone.  Count me in.

I got a dolphin ear but it is a bit questionable.  How would you rate its performance

Frank,

I will in the weeks ahead produce the single hydrophone intended for installation aboard your boat. This is being done so that you could mount this device early with the use of the proper thru-hull fitting. It can be placed within a ballast tank and will hear thru this as long as water is present on both sides. This will not create additional drag if installed in this or likewise manner. I will set up a small process whereby many can be produced at the same time...So....

Does anyone else want a preproduced hydrophone for installation aboard other submarines or for perhaps testing? Perhaps the how-to-instructions so that you could build your own?

I used an all electronics preamp kit and all electronics 7watt amplifier kit and these worked great together allthough other electronics could provide equally good results. Go to allelectronics.com for ordering info. The preamp was less than $10.00 with the 7watt amplifier close to $15.00. All that is left is a small 12vdc battery and a small project box to fit it all in withy the panel controls and on/off switch.

If you want to take this plunge, here is a great chance to dive in.
