Just a wild guess....

You can often slide a magnet with a lot less force than is require to pull it directly off...
I once slid a large magnet about 30' on a steel tank until we manged to get a pry bar under it.  
If I remember correctly it could hold two big guys off the ground..

Maybe he managed to slide it off the tanks.
