Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Manipulator actuattion / design

Hi Hugh,

I'm late to mthe discussion, but have been following along as I will eventually be doing a hydraulic manipulator for my sub. I feel that the separate valves inside of the hull are not really necessary if some things are thought carefully first. I was planning on using the needed quick couplers on the inside of my thru-hull. These are normally closed hydraulic valves when disconnected. If there is a leak just disconnect the coupling. Also since I will only be able to go down to 1000 feet or less then 500 PSI and most any hydraulic system has capability of at least 2000 PSI it seems to me that it will be the strongest link of all the thru hulls.

Just my opinion - What are your thoughts?

Best Regards,

Jim K

Many thanks Jon,
Found that one. Noticed that there are a myriad of Tubes, well , at least 8 anyway that would all require separate internal lockoff valves but no quick
release couplings.
Just as an aside we make quick release couplings for the CNG / NGV industry
so if a car drives away while attached the hose pulls off with about 30kg
force. However a bit bulky and overkill for subs.
I am just doing the design of the controls for VBT,s MBT,s etc and trying to
work out a redundant system that doesn't add a whole lot of extra
penetrators etc. Also trying to fit in an Engine outside and the air from
outside back in thru the hull needs a 2" - 3" valve and with these things it looks a nightmare to have hulking great valves in an array thru the hull to
meet ABS / Psubs safety stds.
Kittredge put some thought into it all. The more I look at his designs and
simplicity yet compliance the more respect for the guy I have. Regards,
Hugh

Hugh,

Dan Brewer built a hydraulic arm for his sub. Photos are available on the
web site under the 2007 convention. While I didn't get a chance to talk to Dan about it, I know some folks on the list did. They (or Dan) can probably
provide some details.

Phil, Where can we get info on the dump mechanism. Sounds a must. Also any
places to see a simple manipulator design? Hugh
