Hi David,
I take it that you need both boats/subs to have a passive sonar
to communicate or do you have something else up your sleeve?

Hugh,
This thing should be very affordable too! This transducer for solids
lists under e-bay on underwater speakers and is 2.5lbs and only 4" in
diameter and sells for about $19.00. It is a tan color and has but two crimp
styled push on connectors on the back. It is fully encased in plastic but must
be further strengthened to go down deeper. It has 8 oms of resistance just as a
regular speaker (just what we were looking for) and is said to take a full 30
watts of power. The system so far produced uses just 7watts.
I will send pictures of my progress on Friday night.

Well done.
At last we can converse with the dolphins who may listen to us,
instead of our wives who rarely do!
The understanding will probably be the same level, but our hope
may be higher.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] milestone reached
To all:
A milestone has just been reached in the quest for underwater voice
communications. A special underwater speaker comprised of a tranducer for
solids has been made that so far looks as if it can be lowered the 500' we are
looking for. The goal was to be able to talk boat to boat while both are
submerged at 150' deep and 150' apart.
Although it is not intended to function down to the full 500', it must
withstand the pressure this far down and come up shallower and still work
reliably.
Frank D. is building a pressure chamber and will test this speaker once
further testing is completed here in TN. This initial underwater speaker is a
key component to Franks passive sonar/underwater communications console.
Other simular communications system are presently under
construction with completions and installs soon to follow.
