I would use a pump set-up for my own sub, but you really could do it either way. I'm don't understand the advantage of using the linaer actuator. You still need lines passing thru the hull unless it's mounted outside. If you mount either one outside you will need to protect the electrical components from water. If you use the linaer actuater you will need to start and stop it every time you use a manipulator function or will stall the motor when you shut off that particular function. With an open center valve the hydraulic fluid will just continue to flow at minimal pressure when hydraulic circuits are not being used.

Hi Jim. Thanks for the input. A question on using the one way hydraulic cylinder.......what powers the cylinder?    Is there a pump included in the system, or are we still talking about using an electric actuator to develop the push like a master/slave set up. Frank D.
