Sounds like fun Alan. The stock strips look like they could be used just
as-is.
The "strip" could be attached to the straight linkage rod, and the magnet
would slide along the rod on a loose "sleeve piece" that didn't extend. Maybe
just a heavy (1/8" ) wire to hold it steady while the linkage rod moved. Like
you said, then just two wires to send the signal to a modified "gas gage" inside
the sub. I'm looking forward to what you find out. Frank
