Hi Jim, I have just got all excited about side scanners and checked with
the Humminbird guy and they have 798 model but it wont work as a forward
scanner. The reason is that it takes a slice for a scan and the lovely
picture is just the memory of the slices it takes as you move forward.
However there is a guy in Norway who is using the software and developing
a forward scanner. Hope that explains it all . The only forward scanners
really are Echopilot and Interphase. Both are Radar type images. It
would be nice to get a nice view like the side scanners form towing arrays but
they only produce that lovely image from the “slice” moving forward. Regards, Hugh From:

was selling for $795.00 but was discontinued and replaced by a new model. I was
able to find old stock at another Gander Mountain store and get the unit for
$595.00 brand new. I'm not sure if that's great pricing or not. I have had the

was concerned about that myself, but will have a side scan sonar aboard and the
side benefit is a distance to the bottom reading. While
really not a depth gauge as the reading will vary with bottom structure and
depth, it should let me know quickly how well I have achieved neutral bouyancy. I'll
let you know how well it works when I'm done testing. Best
