Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Rudder angle indicators

You're right Dean, its probably not vey important.
I was thinking this morning that if the indication unit failed it's not going to sink anyones sub.
You will know when you have the motors or rudders tilted fully one way or another without this, as full stroke
of the actuating pistons is only a few seconds. So keep your finger on the switch for a few seconds & it will be fully one way.
For me with variable speed motor control & two motors, it will be handy to know that if I'm heading right
& the rudders showing straight ahead then one of the motors speed will need tweeking.
It could be a diagnostic tool. If you're not going up & you should be, you would know the motor mounting shaft
had rotated & so the motors had either failed or you were hooked up on something.
I think in low visibility it would have more use.
With reguard to the reed switch; I and I think Frank will be using toggle switches to operate linear actuators
for dive plane & rudders & to find central position you need an external sender monitoring the position.
It's similar to trim tab position indicating on a boat & the only system I've seen that doesn't have an external
monitoring unit uses a timer that switches on LEDs based on the time it takes for a full stroke of the piston
operating the trim tab. This won't work for us, one reason being that the actuators can slow down under load.

I have been following this discussion, and am wondering if it is that important to know
exactly where the rudder is. Wouldn't just a simple read switch, magnet and a light
on the dash do just fine? When it's on your straight if it's not fix it.

Hi Alan. Not so sure you could make one as cheap as the $20 you're going to spend just buying one. Have you developed a schematic for how you'll wire all the parts together ? Will you use a "gas gage" type indicator or something else. If you get it all set up, even just on the bench, you might consider making a little presentation on the projects page. I bet lots of guys would be interested. Looking forward to how this develops.
