I did have some very slight warpage but not enough to compromise the integrity of the seal.  If I had to do it again, I would put a short cylindrical section of sail just below the lower hatch and weld this to my lower hatch.  I would then do final machining on this welded assembly prior to welding this assembly to the top of the sail to totally eliminate warpage issue.
 
I will send you a set of drawings of my sail/hatch off-list.

Hmmm, interesting, this whole time I've been working on the assumption that I need a piece inbetween there because of warpage.  Maybe it's just a matter of how good the welder is. What is your collar dimensions?  around  collar 3/4" thick  and around 26" in diameter?

I had a very experienced professional welder.  He used tig and we braced the heck out of the sail and went very slowly.

Hey Cliff,  How did you weld on your hatch ring without having it warp?  I
don't see any spacing between the hatch ring and the collar.
