I have done a lot of work on mining machinery over the years, and came to 
discover after much trial and error that the personnel at the mines would find 
a way to destroy anything less than 3/4" Grade 8.  I guess the whole notion of 
"a bit of force to help things along" changes when you have many thousands of 
horsepower at your disposal.  At any rate, using hand tools I can twist the 
heads off of 1/4", and deform 3/8", so I tend not to specify anything less than 
1/2" if I can help it, unless I have space or weight constraints.  It is also 
much easier to develop consistent bolt preloads on larger fasteners, as well 
as being easier to keep the threads clean.
