Vance,
Here's a link to my actuator on psubs. It will give
you an idea how they work.
Mine seems to be totally different than Franks. I
like his better, much less bulky.
One concern I had was the little micro
switches controlling travel, which I felt could get air trapped
in them & randomly stop the actuator at depth
due to the compensating oil pushing on their switch.
I poked a hole in mine with a hot needle just to be
sure. Also because WD40 doesn't like some plastic
I'm compensating with something more viscous which
will have more trouble penetrating into these little devices.

I'm starting to get really
interested here, Frank. Would you send me the manufacturer info on these
things? I'd like to have one in my hand to see what I can see.

Hi Hugh. Yes, speed is a concern. The actuators don't have the shaft
coming out the back so the overall length is increased to 14 inches
to include the rod in the "closed" position. Oil compensation will negate
the pressure differential, so just getting them sealed should take care of
that.
This particular unit is rated at 40 pounds push/pull, holding power is
100 pounds, and full load speed is .7 inches per second with a 6 inch stroke.
I also have a 12 inch stroke one that is rated at 150 pounds push/pull but
it's speed is slower at .4 inches per second. The length is about 17 inches.
The shaft on both is 5/8 inch diameter and the casing is 2 inches
square.
