 They're not all that big. Almost every
 airplane I've ever flown had one. The only ones that did
 not didn't have a starter either. Go to a small local
 airport and someone will hand you one to look at.  Or you
 could just get a 1" solid state accelerometer to feed
 into a display. There are some discussions of all the above
 in old threads. I'll send a link or two when I'm
 home again.
