Basically what it boils down to is how humanly possible it is to get it as near as perfect as you can.  If you first instruct the fabricators to get it as close as possible, then you need to go from there.  You can always massage it into a perfect sphere by using the proper amount of leverage. 

  It seems to me, though, if you're going to have an escape pod you might as well just build another sub for all the trouble it will be worth.
