Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Model of Bushnell's Turtle

Hi Mike.

Here is another site confusing Bushnell with the 1812 (turtle like) submarine shown in Samuel Colts drawing which was built by Silas Halsey, NOT Bushnell..
It did resemble an improved turtle. Although not built by Bushnell, possibly inspired by his original turtle.
http://submarinehistory.homestead.com/Bushnell.html

And still another site that erroneously mentions "sketchy" records indicate Bushnell built another turtle and used it in 1812
Again, this was Silas Halsey, not Bushnell.

And yet ANOTHER site that erroneously says Bushnell rebuilt the turtle and used it again against british shipping in 1812
http://www.btinternet.com/~philipr/InvenSub.html

The below link tells of Silas Halsey who lost his life in 1814 in a sub trying to blow up a british ship, NOT Bushnell.
But since Bushnell's fame had spread because he was first, a lot of people believed it was Bushnell. You must remember
in those days, information traveled by word of mouth a lot and people had (and have) a tendency to repeat something in a way
that is familiar to them. They were familiar with Bushnell and his turtle, but not familiar with Silas Halsey. So it is
easy to understand that when people heard of a sub trying to sink a british ship in 1814, they would remember Bushnell and
claim it was him.

It's funny that even in our modern age with computers and instant information, this misinformation confusing Halsey with Bushnell still exists!

I hope this answered your question Mike, of  "where are they getting the information?"

Bill Akins.

Once again, there's a reference to other attacks.  This is the first time
I've seen the Turtle listed as the one in the War of 1812.  Where are they
getting the information?
