Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] concept sketch

Thanks for the comments. Actually, I had planned, but not yet included in the drawing, an upper hatch in the lockout compartment for emergency escape / PTC or rescue vehicle mating. Such a hatch is best positioned far from the sail and superstructure. Similarly, there would be an emergency escape hatch in the machinery space at the aft end, only with no lock, so that hatch would be usable only for transfers, or for escape by scuttling the boat. To use the upper hull as the lockout I would have to increase either the beam of the boat or the height to create enough space below the hatch to accomodate diver entry and exit, unless I just wanted a wet lockout. The diameter of the lockout compartment needs to be large enough to accomodate the large size of the diver lockout hatch, and to be functional. The sail hull as shown is too small to stand in. It is definitely an idea worth putting some more thought into, though. The ability to lock out divers when bottomed is a good idea, although with the upper hatch included, my design would work in a pinch by flooding the compartment. Large space to blow dry again, though.

The suction problem in a soft bottom did cross my mind - the only solution I thought of was additional superstructure in the form of bottoming skids. Air pressure blowing seems like unnecessarily complicating the problem, as well as being a waste of air. Maybe an outrigger system would work? Hydraulically operated legs that unfold from the outer hull?

As for saving money, the standard rule of overkill applies: why build one when you can build two at twice the price? Hey - that gives me an idea. If I equip the boat with a mating skirt, any number of these "sister ships" could be connected together to form an underwater complex for specific mission requirements, or just for crews to have luch together. ;)

Hi Sean - great concept.
I would like to think about to change the position of the diver lookout
chamber to the aft end of the sail pressire hull. On this position you
can use it as emergency look out chamber even with the boat on the
ground. With a additional top hatch maybe also as transit chamber for
dsrv and other subs.
In the position as shown you have anchor the sub to take divers in and
out - in the top positon you can just rest the boat on the ground.
Maybe this boat needs a high pressure air blowing system below the keel.
The keel area seems a realy big flat area - indicates a a heavy suction
effekt to a soft ground.
Do you think we can safe some money if we build two units ? ;-)
