Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hull Shaping Question

Why not make a standard preasure hull and then tack on a nose cone to that? this way you get both the benefits of a solid preasure hull without adding surface area and the streamlining affect of a foreward cone superstructure for streamlining. You'll have a bit more weight forward to compensate for but you can fix that relatively easily.

Machining? Putting your hull form on a lathe and machining it? I'm not entirely certain how larger hulls are fabricated, the biggest hull I've made so far was 12' long by 6' diameter and I did that on a lathe. The endcaps where also done on a lathe. I doubt however that you can get a whole hull the size needed for a human being machined like I do for my ROV project and test pieces.

I'm sure someone else would know more about the process for larger hulls, I just wanted to throw the "Keep the preasure hull and take on a streamlined superstructure" idea out there. Just seems a lot safer to me.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hull Shaping Question

I have some questions about hull construction and was
hoping that some of y'all might be able to lend a
little assistance?

The project I am working on is a shallow water sub
(designed for lake use, max lake depth is 200') and so
I am making a slightly pointed nose cone for the bow
of the sub.

My questions are:

- What is the terminology for the processes of
rolling a shaped hull?
- Does anyone out there have any experience in
producing such a nose cone shape?
- Since I will likely be outsourcing this part of the
assembly to an ASME certified welding shop (for safety
reasons) how could I best convey what I am trying to
achieve more coherently than I have above?
- Does anyone know of any other nose cone shaped subs
out there?

Any help would be apreciated!

Thanks,
Rob
