Rick - for those of us who are complete neophytes on the electrical 
side, what are the major advantages and disadvantages of, for example:

Scenario 1)  Diesel drives AC generator, which powers AC motor 
controller.  AC rectified to DC to charge batteries, when engine off, 
batteries power inverter which sends AC to motor controller.   or

scenario 2) Diesel drives DC generator, which powers DC motor 
controller.  DC regulated to charge batteries directly.  When engine 
off, DC/DC converter sending DC to motor controller.
