RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Sphere

I'd like to know a good source for spheres also. And
other than FEMA on a cad system (Solidworks etc.) I am
unsure how to acurately predict failure.

On a sphere, because of it's simple shape, I would
think that the falure calculation should be somewhat
simple. That is, without bulkheads probably.

Deep sea power and light offers a program called under pressure- I
believe it's about $200- it is VERY easy to use and caculates the crush
depths for any pressure vessel of any material as long as it is
cylindrical or spherical. The only downside is it is designed for
makers of small pressure vessels- ie- things that are being machined
absolutely perfect- so- when you're talking about spheres big enough to
get into- unless you are funded with tax dollars you are not going to be
able to afford to machine something that large - especially spherical-
Other than that- I suggest looking thru the Busby book carefully-
there are at least a dozen specs given on spherical hulls- thickness,
material and diameter- and you can extrapolate from that- it's perfectly
scalable- that's why models work- almost all subs are either 516- grade
70 or Hy-100- so- your'e material variable is fairly fixed- for
reference 516-70 is roughly half as strong as the Hy-100- hope that
helps- Karl
