Do you mean the shape of the head would be easier to control with regard to flow over its surface underwater? If that is the case, it might be cheaper to get the elliptical head, and then fabricate a superstructure / outer hull to take care of the hydrodynamics. This can be much thinner than your pressure hull. Then again, the hemispherical head gives you more interior space to work with - provided you find a way to make effective use of it. Really depends on the price difference.

Just wondering if you really need a hemispherical versus a 2:1 semi-elliptical head? The latter tends to be significantly cheaper to manufacture.

Sorry, no sources, but a Google search for boilermakers, or pressure vessel heads should turn up something.
