I myself, had never heard of this fellow nor the Ictineo until I developed
a more than passing interest in submersible design in this past year or so.
The article from Paul is fascinating, and as Jay states, the man was light
years ahead of his time. This man obviously caught the "bug" as evidenced
by the depth and amount of study he put into it prior to starting. I found
that particular aspect to be somewhat encouraging to me personally.
From Pauls article....
"After the final crushing defeat of watching his second submarine
dismantled and scrapped, he faded into obscurity, condemning future
submarine inventors to retread the paths he had so painstakingly
pioneered".
I suspect that in the end, this man and his efforts, were not so obscure to
people like Holland, Lake, Fulton and others, and ultimately that is how he
made his mark.

Paul,
The book is very good (drags once in a while) and demonstrates the trials
and tribulations of early submarine design, under-funded and lacking
technology. Picked the book up on Amazon, see:

Jay, the book is good? That sounds like one fascinating story.
Here's a short article about the inventor and the sub (w/ photos):
