Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] ICTINEO now in Kodak gallery
Hello Brian
The Ictinoe II that is on display in Barcelona as far
as I know was build for a movie to recreate the life
of Narcico Monturiol. The movie is in catalan and I
have no idea if it is posible to get it.
The Ictineo functioned well and it is suposed to dive
to 50 m depth (150 feet). The first Ictineo was
powered by muscle power. The second one the one
displayed was powered by a steam mashine with coal
combustion in the surface and exotermical combustion
of chemicals submerged. The steam engine worked wery
well and was used for many years in a mill until
scraped.
The submarine was build for the coral harvest. A
still very lucrative business and the idea was used
again in the 1960 where again small submarines were
used for this propuse.
The most impresing thing is the air regeneration
sistem the chemical combustion produced oxigen and
with a specieal filter the level of organic particles
in the air was keopth low. This organic particles are
responsible that we feel the air is used although the
oxigen amount in the air is of 20%.
Monturiol called this the animalillos (small animals).
It is incredible tha he discovered this in that time
and in the last 4 year modern scientist discovered the
same thing. He was really light years of this time.
Best wishes
Jürgen
