RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] vendors/services

Jon,

I appreciate the opportunity, please go ahead and list me under
Research, or perhaps we can extend it a little by calling it "Research
and Education".

My interest is turning my submersibles into tools for research and
education on a no-cost basis, for those with a meritorious idea but no
funds. I am interested in connecting with NGOs, high schools, undergrad
university programs, etc. to deliver presentations to students,
collaborate on student engineering projects, or conduct modest field
research. I'm driven by a passion for science, in particular for
environmental issues affecting the oceans, and believe there is an unmet
need for research that lies beyond the capability of SCUBA yet is far
short of justifying commercial or institutional submersibles, both from
the perspectives of depth ratings and budgets. Certainly my K-250 is no
Deep Worker or Alvin, yet if the end user is a high school science
teacher, a K-250 might make a lot of sense. My principal constraint is
time, since I must schedule these activities around a demanding day job
at a major corporation.

I would suggest listing my non-work email: alecsmyth@gmail.com. Maybe
I'll put together a website someday, but for now email is all I can
offer!

Thanks,

Alec

Thanks Alec, I'll add them to my list. What about the things that you
wanted to do with snoopy? Are you going to include those? I've got
categories for "research" and "search/recovery", and I can add more.

Jon

Jon, I think this is an exceedingly good idea. I'll avoid local
suppliers such as anodizing services, sand blasting, etc. and focus on
web based (anywhere) suppliers.

MISC ELECTRONICS
www.digikey.com

PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLERS
www.automationdirect.com

ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTATION
www.metercenter.com

PENETRATORS
www.subconn.com
Subconn has an unusual penetrator with 4 high amperage conductors rated
at 50A per conductor. This means you can run a pair of trolling motors
through a single penetrator.

www.seaconbrantner.com
Rubber molded series is the least expensive.

www.impulse-ent.com
Probably the best pricing at this time. Check rubber molded series,
which is virtually identical to Seacon Brantner's.

STEEL
www.metalexpress.net
Small quantity supplier

TROLLING MOTORS
www.trollingmotorparts.com
This company sold me only the lowers and speed controllers, without
charging as much as for the whole motors. Also, they provide expert
advice.

And of course... eBay, MSC, and McMaster are the other 90% of the sub!

Cheers,

Alec

Hello all,

I am going to be rewriting the "sources" web page at PSUBS.ORG and
recategorizing things, removing broken links, and updating existing
links. This is an open invitation to anyone in our group that provides a
service and/or product, to get included on this page. We will provide
your name and a link to your website if you have one. If you are
interested in more visibility, please contact Ray or myself for
opportunities.

We also need your help for contact information to suppliers of various
kinds. I'd like to see us be to the point where a person can find
suppliers for materials or products to built a sub from top to bottom.
Hull materials, fittings, hoses, viewports, domes, and anything else you
run across or have purchased in your area, please send us a note with
contact information so we can include it. Even if it is just someone
local, we'll include it so that others near that location can find a
source.

Another area I would like to see progress on is "white papers" and/or
"how-to" papers for various manufacturing stages and accessories that
are added to a submersible. Please consider sharing details of your
experiences with others.

I'm looking forward to your help in this area.

Jon
