Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Overpowered?
All I really would care to say about acoustics, is that those boats
employ a lot of methods to keep them quiet, and the tiles aren't
padding for when they hit whales.
One of the more accurate depictions of a Los Angeles-class submarines
in movies, is The Hunt for Red October. A lot more of the hideous mint
green color on the inside though. Or if you're intersted in seeing the
real deal:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/subsecrets/inside.html
If you're curious about what you see in the galley, YES those are
slushie machines, and YES they really do put them on LA-class subs.
That would be a nice psub mod!!!
If you don't mind me asking, how are you going to apply a nose cone
mounting ring to a psub mod? As far as I understand most psubs are
small enough where one could simply lift up their own fiberglass
pieces by hand... Unless it's not fiberglass you're mounting?
As far as the loss of Scorpion, I have no information on that. It's a
little before my time. I do know that, allegedly, many times during
the cold war, boats would come in for dent repairs on their hull or
nose. It was from playing cat-and-mouse games with the Russians.
They'd just stop their propulsion system outright, and our boats would
do the same. Being more efficient machines, our boats would glide
right into them. Sometimes, it would happen the other way, too. From
what I understand, those boats follow each other VERY close.
For anyone designing a sub, I think learning about military subs is a
good idea. A lot of those boats are simply redundant systems, and good
engineering.

Fascinating read Thomas..thank you. I noted in one of the pictures what
appears reminiscent of the thermal tiles on a shuttle. Knowing zero about
military subs, I am assuming these are acoustic related in some manner.
I found the nose cone mounting ring something of particular interest for me
with regard to a psub modification I am contemplating...a good lead...thanks
again.
The author in one of the posts, (if I read him correctly), eludes to the
loss of Scorpion being as a result of a cold war encounter in mid ocean with
a soviet sub (supposedly also lost), rather than resulting from a "hot run"
torpedo. Is there any truth to this...or is this conspiracy theory bobo
nonsense?
