Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] ROV

Airplane props are nice, but I would suggest that you canabalize a computer heat-sync fan for that blad... works better. Also I would suggest you mount it on a piece of pvc pipe that you've warped with a heat gun and form to be a nozzle.

Either that or just use a bilge pump and cut off the impeller housing to just use the motor itself. (You can also use the pump itself as a jet system)

my project is desiigned for harbour use so i dont really need more than 10m
/ 30' depth.
the tube i have is underground sewer pipe, 20" long and 5mm thickness.
i'm actually using the videoray as my inspiration. my thrusters are
external, and are mounted in oil filled pods (or will be when i get the
oil). they are dc motors with a 5:1 planetary gearhead. they dont pull too
much current even under load and i am using r/c aircraft props. these i
have found also dont give too much drag but give a lot of thrust.

what are you usiing for control? i currently have a velleman kit for
control. 10 i/o, 50m range over 2 wires, current loop based i think. i've built it into a case. 2 joysticks and several other lever and switches and a
5 1/2" monitor.
i also have a basic stamp which i intend to use for depth and heading info
but might use that for control instead

Steve:

I agree about not having a drainpipe submersible. PVC is a good option for
most beginners, but you want the PVC that's made for extended pressure.

Another thing that I kind of thought up of (and tested) is removing the
fan
from a large refrigerator (the restaurant kind). I actually did that, and
then built a plastic "pod" around it to keep it airtight. Basically,
everything except the propeller is inside of the pod. The propeller shaft
has washers on both sides. I don't know the end result for deep and long
dives, but what I can say is that this engine produced a lot of power. It
is
very much electric, so I advise you take extreme caution when using it.

On a related story, anyone have some helpful insight on the wired world of
ROV's? I need a more efficient wired system for surface to sub control.

hey joey
as you cant cheaply buy an rov, much of my own project follows the idea to
have 70-80% constructed from parts available in a hardware store or
similar.
but i dont want a drainpipe sub!
my hull is an 8"sewer pipe tho. i want functional and looking good
i'll emailyou later
