I have here three DC 40 kw motors from older CNC tool-machinery
- second hand - was 200 USD each.
The problem are the switch and controllers - not an easy find.
There are two types of diesel electic drives.
Type one is full diesel electric :
prop- e-motor - cabel - controller - e-generator - dieselmotor
If the e-motor fails : no drive
if the controller fails : no drive
if the e generator fails : no drive
if the dieselmotor fails : no drive
This type one needs a full size diesel, full size generator and full size E-motor
For example for euronaut 100 kw each to run on the surface full speed.
Type two is semi-diesel-electric
prop - shaft - e-motor/generator - shaft - diesel
if something fails - the other system can take the boat home.
And the eletric system is designed for underwater drive only.
Diesel 100 kw - rest 40.
The second system has more redundancy and is lighter so I choose that.
But you have to design and build the shaft and transmissions belts.
The type one can be build from standard components - and conected just via a cable.
But is heavier has no redunany and is not cheaper and needs more space because
of two e-motors and one bigger frequency drives.
I choose type two.
But I would like to make a new matrix with pro and con for each sub-design.
Maybe for an electrican with good knowledge of controllers - type one is easier to make than for a more mechanical guy like me. I understand the function of a shaft between prop and diesel
- but not of a software -progammed - frequency - controller. :-0
