RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] RE: MSV Alvin Jr. Update

Wow, what CAD work! Some ideas (sorry to be so brief, work is calling)

- The K boat MBTs IMO are a bit of a pain when it comes to the method
for joining pressure hull and tank (silicon sealant). In my experience
the seal has a tendency to develop small leaks, and is an absolute beast
to disassemble. It would be an improvement if you built tanks that were
self contained, without using the pressure hull as part of the tank.

- The MBTs burp with the surface movement of the boat. I see you've put
in little skirts. You may want to consider enclosed bottoms on the MBTs,
with openings piped lower, or on the centerline. The key would be to put
a large access pane on the bottom of the MBTs. I actually glassed in the
bottom of Snoopy's MBTs for this reason, though I ended up undoing the
job for easier maintenance access. But the "right" approach would have
been access panels under the tanks.

- I think you may want to make those saddle tanks slope up towards
whatever location you'll place the venting valves at (presumably the
center).

- If you go with that decklike fairing, why not just turn the whole
thing into tanks? You'd still want it divided up, but it would be less
work than tanks and fairing as separate items.

Thanks,

Alec

One thing (which you may have already addressed) is the extra gas you
need to carry to blow the larger soft tanks. If I remember correctly,
ABS says you need to be able to clear your software tanks 3 (I'm not
100% sure it's '3') times at max operating depth.

I realize that not everybody wants to follow ABS standards, but they do
make a
good set of guide lines. Also the K350 was designed with these type of
safe
margins, and when up dating the design it seems a good idea to maintain
them.

I like the pics, kind of reminds me of a k350 (re)design I was playing
with a while back.

Cheers,
 Ian.
