RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] "The Enemy Below"

Never noticed the hatch detail but, one of the finest war boat movies ever made, second only to Das Boot.

"The Enemy Below" (1957), Robert Mitchum, (Capt. Murell)

This film may have been inspired by a USCG action against the U-550 in 1944

If anyone has the movie " The Enemy Below" check out the hatch on the
German U-Boat just after Scauffer yells "alarm" and they pull the plug
to submerge from the on coming destroyer (the Haynes). Just as Scauffer
is closing the hatch if you do a freeze frame on that view of the hatch
it has a very interesting mechanisim on it, which makes me think that
it is a real sub hatch. Whether or not it is a German hatch I have no
idea. But the hatch has a ratchet cylinder with a cable attached which
looks like it is made to keep the hatch in an open position while it is
upright. It may also have a spring mechanisim which helps balance the
heavy weight whin opening. Has anybody noticed that?
