Damn the laws of physics! I say we try it!

Oh, idea. Those moving magnets can generate electricity. Feed it back to the motor, and you have a perpetual motion machine. Lets see who swallows that one...

After (simply) buying a coupling you would still have to deal with the alignement of the two axes. When you look at the cut-away picture you will see they apply a big and strong frame to achieve that. A small misalignment will be increased by the force off the magnets. I think starting from scratch might even be the easier way.

I have added 3 more links. One of them shows a configuration in which the magnets are placed in 2 causers opposing each other. It seems this is much more forgifing than the other solution. The separation between the two parts is a flat disc. This might be a problem under high pressure. Another problem is the axial force on the bearings.

Another thing to consider if the influence of the magnets on a compass and maybe other electronic components. Applied in a ROV you can forget the compass.

Granted, but there is plenty that needs to be fabbed on a psub already.
IMO you are best served fabbing as little as you can and getting the
project wet sooner (and more cost effectively) rather than later.

Designing things is fun and engaging but life is short, even at <30.
 Just my .02 though.

Half the fun of this hobby is fabricating things though...

It is probably cheaper to buy them off the shelf anyway.
You may need to go through a middleman If they won't sell Onesies/Twosies though.

Man that looks so close to my own design it's not funny, I hope they didn't patent it.

Some off the shelf magnetic couplings
