Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] NEW PROJECT

IAIN

Sounds like a fun project, It is all do able I question the cost figure though but if you plan for a shallow sub it could be done reasonably cheap if you don't get fancy.

the depth requirements are going to determine the size and cost of your sub.my design has a primary hull weight of 5500 lbs before equipment and salvage capacity.the final number put the displacement at about 7800 lbs. but this is a 1000 ft design. you could shave 2500 lbs of f for a 500 ft design. the sub has to displace what it weighs. so final size is determined by weight and crew confort.

hard ballast is split for to reasons,  you dont want all the water to run to the front or the back and end up with a tilt. the second is to trim the boat. using a hard ballast ratio of 5% and a displacement of 8000 lbs you end up with  a hard ballst area of about 6.5 ft^3 that is alot of sloshing area. trim tanks should be the biggest dia you can get away with to minimize the cg change.

diesel propulsion can be either direct drive, pain due to shatf seal and engine alignment considerations. Or diesel electric, this allows for the same drive motor to beused above or below the surface, one of the members brian i thank is playing  with a towed generator compantment that is anchored proir to the dive. i looked at both ideas and personally decided that a surface support craft large enough to tow the sub was going to be a better idea than inclusion of engine power. a ugly old work boat can be had pretty cheap. And as a saftey percaution at least somebody on the surface would know about where you are. evem if your friends wont dive in it, most would go for a fishing trip.

    navigation

flux gate compasses have to be mount on a pole about 2 to 3 feet from the hull to get good readings, and there are several good profiling sonars for boats that could be adapted for a resonable cost. most of the guys are just dead reconing navigaing though.

the largest expense items are the ports and the electronics. a uwt telephone set will set you back about 3000 ea you need two. the view ports for mine will be about 12000 whne thier done. figure motor at 2hp and controllers 700 ea that includes all the control gear. i have a budget for my sub right at 50,000$ but i am using a acrylic conning tower and twin manipulators. that by it self was a fifteen thousand upgrade.

i placed the batteries in the main compartment, due to the cost of separate pods and the fact that i am going with a 42 inch ida hull it also saves on the cost of thru hulls for the electrics. all of my external valving is hyd controlled so i have saved on machining cost and complicated rigging of push pull tubes. remember any thing going thru the hull that is hand operated has to turn, not push pull. this can be over come using hyd, but not manually. my rudder system is simply to double acting hyd ram tied together one attached to pedals inside to other attached to the motor pod pivot arms.

hope that this answered some of your questions

Dear People.

A whole heap of Q's

1.

Does anyone design 2 man subs with diesels? I need to be able to have my sub be quite quick relatively speaking in the water, (6 knots) as I have no means of carrying it on a big boat. Is more than 6 knots achievable with a diesel?  I was thinking around 8hp diesel....   Just guessing.

I assume the diesel can never run underwater? Or is it possible to run for say a minute just under the surface where exhaust escape pressure is minimal and there is enough oxygen in the engine chamber to keep in going?

2.

I notice looking at photos that few subs seem to have separate fore and aft ballast tanks to level out when load distribution is not the same for every dive. Why is this? Or do they?

3.

Can someone give me a rough guess on size needed for a 2 person, 1 atm sub, with diesel and electric.

I was going for a pressure chamber about 3m long and about 1m diamter. And the height gaineed through risers with view ports.

4. Would a normal sized 2 person 1 ATM sub cope in the ocean off a surf beach in say 1.5m swell? Can you just stay below for most of the time and travel to a quiet inlet for embarking and disembarking?

5. Would 10,000 Australian be sufficient to complete a 2 person, 1 ATM sub? I can possibly get most things at a very good price including the pressure chamber.

6.

What sort of navigation equipment to personal subs have on them and how expensive is it? Can any of the sonar equiopment be home made? How about using a fish finder pointer ahead horizontally like we use on boats just with the cone angle going hirizontal?
