Michael There is one thing I forgot to tell you that relates to cutting rings - of the more softer materials - using a lathe: If the mandrel should start waving about, then it helps to shape the mandrel a bit (see attached sketch) so that the chuck of the lathe is gripping onto solid steel (or brass) for 2/3 of it's jaw depth, and only a 1/3 squeezing down on the soft material.
