Frank a concern I might have with this idea is if a wave should
bend it. Would you
still be able to close your hatch no matter what? I would think
that could be a problem.
I think a cleaner method would be to just build a hydraulic
telescoping tower hehehh

It's a little late to re-do the hatch hinge. Not having a "tower" like a
"K" boat will make it pretty easy for a wave to wash over the hull and into
the open hatch. "YIKES !!!"
