RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] SONAR (was "depth gauges")

Thanks David! A sonar will be heading your way by mail, together with it's associated hull penetrator...

Alec,

Let me have a crack at this...

I have taken video cables apart for use with digital cameras and reconnected them at various lengths with some success...maybe I'll get lucky with this also.

I've got an Interphase, but have never been able to get it to work properly. Herve Jaubert used these very successfully on his subs, but I remember Carsten reporting issues with them like I've experienced. I suspect the reason may be that Herve could maintain the transducer cable integrity as his subs were ambient, while I (and I presume Carsten) had to cut the cable to pass it through a hull penetrator. The echosounder part is the only functionality that has worked for me, but for the forward-looking "radar" view produces only noise. It looks cool enough with a sweeping line pizza-slice type display, but what you actually get on the screen doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to what's actually in front of the sub. I tried passing the shielding through one of the penetrator conductors, running the unit off an independent battery, and even wrapping the cable inside the sub in aluminum foil to shield it from electrical noise, but no luck. So it's coming out of the sub.

I'll gladly loan this sonar out to anyone interested in experimenting with it. Else, it'll go on eBay with a disclaimer.

thanks,

Alec

Hi Jim,

I have just got all excited about side scanners and checked with the Humminbird guy and they have 798 model but it wont work as a forward scanner.

The reason is that it takes a slice for a scan and the lovely picture is just the memory of the slices it takes as you move forward.  However there is  a guy in Norway who is using the software and developing a forward scanner.

Hope that explains it all .  The only forward scanners really are Echopilot and Interphase.  Both are Radar type images.  It would be nice to get a nice view like the side scanners form towing arrays but they only produce that lovely image from the “slice” moving forward.

Regards, Hugh

Hi Hugh,

I am using a Humminbird 797. It is a last years model that was selling for $795.00 but was discontinued and replaced by a new model. I was able to find old stock at another Gander Mountain store and get the unit for $595.00 brand new. I'm not sure if that's great pricing or not. I have had the unit for about 2 months or so.

Best Regards,

Hi Jim,

What side scan are you using and how much etc.  I was looking at them in a magazine and thinking they are what we need but don’t know if there is a reasonably  priced one.  Chs   Hugh

Hi Alan,

I was concerned about that myself, but will have a side scan sonar aboard and the side benefit is a distance to the bottom reading.

While really not a depth gauge as the reading will vary with bottom structure and depth, it should let me know quickly how well I have achieved neutral bouyancy.

I'll let you know how well it works when I'm done testing.

Best Regards,

Hi psubbers,

Went for a couple of dives yesterday (scuba). The last being in an old quarry where the visibility was bad

& when I hit a thermocline it just went black. I didn't know wether I was going up or down half the time.

Was thinking from this experience that I'd like a digital depth readout in my sub in fine increments of at least 6 inch depth

deviations. Is there anything like that out there that would be suitable? And if so how is it set up. ie. is the pressure sensor outside

the sub with wires through the hull or is it on the inside threaded into a hull penetration or something.

Any thoughts on anything that might be adaptable to this purpose would be appreciated also.

Regards Alan
