The Blue View unit when we bought it was a lot of money but if I remember the money was for the repeater not the unit itself because it is on an ROV it has a paten bottle with a repeater in it, and it works very well it shows nets lines fish anything that would produce an echo, as I remember the email from them the price was less than half, http://www.blueview.com/software.html there is a video on here shows a unit working they don’t list the unit I have but I will try to locate the email and forward the info the other unit I have not run yet but it’ s very similar and cheaper from my understanding I will be testing it out when we get back to Boston and will share my findings its built in the UK and has no FCC rating that was one problem getting it shipped from Canada Mike Caudle can fill you in more detail on that unit

Hi Bryan,  What are the dollars on the unit.  What is the best model for us and do they detect ropes and fishing nets?  Those are my biggest concern in murky water.

I will try and contact them but if you have a heads up on it it would certainly help.  Chs  Hugh

Hello everyone

We have a Blue View unit on rotary actuator that also has a light and HD camera and its forward looking plus a depth sounder, the actuator is capable of 180 degrees and I got an email a while back that they upgraded and where selling the older units of at a reduced price, ours depth rated for 3300 feet but I know they have a unit that’s rated for 1000 feet . and then there is - Sonavision  Model Mercury PC based scanning sonar with PPI, Sidescan, A-scan, B-scan,True Acoustic Zoom www.sonavision.co.uk this is the one we are putting on PRV2 mounted the same way as above

PS 96 degrees in the windward passage seas 2 foot another beautiful day at sea, but that will all be changing we are heading for the North Atlantic

Hi Jim,

I have just got all excited about side scanners and checked with the Humminbird guy and they have 798 model but it wont work as a forward scanner.

The reason is that it takes a slice for a scan and the lovely picture is just the memory of the slices it takes as you move forward.  However there is  a guy in Norway who is using the software and developing a forward scanner.

Hope that explains it all .  The only forward scanners really are Echopilot and Interphase.  Both are Radar type images.  It would be nice to get a nice view like the side scanners form towing arrays but they only produce that lovely image from the “slice” moving forward.

Regards, Hugh

Hi Hugh,

I am using a Humminbird 797. It is a last years model that was selling for $795.00 but was discontinued and replaced by a new model. I was able to find old stock at another Gander Mountain store and get the unit for $595.00 brand new. I'm not sure if that's great pricing or not. I have had the unit for about 2 months or so.

Best Regards,

Hi Jim,

What side scan are you using and how much etc.  I was looking at them in a magazine and thinking they are what we need but don’t know if there is a reasonably  priced one.  Chs   Hugh

Hi Alan,

I was concerned about that myself, but will have a side scan sonar aboard and the side benefit is a distance to the bottom reading.

While really not a depth gauge as the reading will vary with bottom structure and depth, it should let me know quickly how well I have achieved neutral bouyancy.

I'll let you know how well it works when I'm done testing.

Hi psubbers,

Went for a couple of dives yesterday (scuba). The last being in an old quarry where the visibility was bad

& when I hit a thermocline it just went black. I didn't know wether I was going up or down half the time.

Was thinking from this experience that I'd like a digital depth readout in my sub in fine increments of at least 6 inch depth

deviations. Is there anything like that out there that would be suitable? And if so how is it set up. ie. is the pressure sensor outside

the sub with wires through the hull or is it on the inside threaded into a hull penetration or something.

Any thoughts on anything that might be adaptable to this purpose would be appreciated also.

Regards Alan
