Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] concept sketch
Actually, I was working on a single hull design, fitting everything in,
and thinking that it was getting way too long to be reasonable. I was
working out how much larger a diameter of the pressure hull I would need
to shorten it to something reasonable, when I noticed The Hunt for Red
October on my bookshelf. So the short answer is yes.
As far as building it, I don't think so. I'm not in the business, and
certainly am not able to capitalize such a project. It is a useful
design exercise, though. I have already learned a few things in the
process. I took all of the hull strength calculation formulae in the
ABS guidelines and wrote them into a MATLAB program which attempts to
optimize the hull design. The program isn't done yet, but when it is it
should save lots of time. Using a provided minimum internal diameter
and working depth, the program uses a lookup table of structural
sections with their properties, and iterates through hull designs using
every possible combination of stiffener section, number of heavy
stiffeners, number of non-heavy stiffeners, internal versus external
stiffening, and incremental plate thicknesses starting with the provided
minimum diameter, to converge on a solution which results in the lowest
overall volume of steel necessary for fabrication.

Great design and the software is fun.
Did you get any inspiration fro the Russian Typhoon?
Are you actually thinking of building it?
