Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST]

And then there's the price of Machining the parts out of the materials ;)

I'd suggest looking for classes in a machine shop at your school. It would give you credits, training and SHOP ACCESS! Then all that
free scrap will be useful! For practice at least:

Something to remember about scrap; if you don't know what it is
(alloy) and why it's scrap (flaws?) then you probably shouldn't use it on
a sub build. Remember, the only thing between you and catastrophic implosion (you-burger) is your sub and much like a chain, your pressure hull is only as strong as its weakest link.

Wow! I had no idea that marine aluminum was that expensive. I also had
no idea there was a difference between marine aluminum and any other
aluminum (perhaps density of the aluminium? remember I'm new to this)
My father is the superintendent of a steel warehouse (Central Steel
and Wire Co.; www.centralsteel.com) so I reap benefits such as
employee discounts and free scrap. This could be a major factor of the
overall cost. Unfortunately he retires in 7 years so I may be out of
luck since I'm a broke college student unable to purchase materials.

Thanks, I'll keep the questions coming! MIke
