Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] sub concept sketch

The very first John Holland submarine that was SUSPOSED to be purchased by the U.S. Navy was steam powered. It was a failure.
The Navy INSISTED Holland power it with steam against Hollands arguements. The crew was unable to stay in the boat because it
got so hot from the boiler. After that the Navy listened to Holland. August Nordenfeldt built some steam powered subs but I would imagine it would be like shoveling coal
in hell being in a steam powered sub. Then there is always the problem of the boiler possibly exploding! Nicht gut. Diesel or electric or both is your best best. Just like
Holland said.

I'll second the others' comments - nice, handsome looking boat!  I've always thought the Protector had a stout, capable look and I think Patrick's sketch has the same feel.

(To really nail that Victorian look, how about a steam engine and boiler?!   :-))
