You may want to consider a lot of beam with a flat or slightly arced bottom.
Take a look at the Russian Typhoon subs. It's a design I considered for that
exact reason.  I wanted to be able to plane to a dive site and all that beam
would have done the trick.  The idea is to create a lot of buoyancy in order
to plane.

An added benefit is eliminating the necessity for saddle tanks.
