Jens could I leave every second LED out of the schematic so that
my 20 LED diaplay for the 10k pot would be then a 10 LED display
the same as the 5k pot.?

If you're still using a 10kOhm pot-meter, then the circuit will not know
the difference (only you will :)
What I mean is, your rudder's center position will still be aligned with
the center position of this 10kOhm pot-meter, right?
So the difference (for you) will be that the rudder position indicator
stops at the fifth (red or green) LED whenever your rudder is turned all
the way to port or starboard.
