Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] TANK / PSI QUESTION

I meant to say....With internal pressure, the roundness of the vessel is NOT as critical as it is with external pressure (compression).

Not necessarily...internal pressure exerts tension on the metal while external pressure results in compression.  They are not the same.  With internal pressure, the roundness of the vessel is as critical as it is with external pressure (compression).  Think of a plastic Coke bottle...it would withstand a lot more internal pressure before bursting but would take a lot less external pressure to crumple it.

Here's a question to the more mechanical types.  If I have a normal rounded metal tank rated for an internal pressure of 200 psi then, I could assume it would be capable of 200 psi external pressure?
