Ah - a non-pressurized enclosure would explain the
Oscar II's square windows.. Thanks!
That still doesn't explain the alternate application,
however, the large rectangular windows of the SeaWorld
variety. Certainly an appropriately beveled viewport
(even with right angles) could be waterproofed
effectively in a similar fashion?

Plus round windows are less likely to push through.
It's the same theory
behind manhole covers, no matter which way you turn
them they won't fall
down the hole.
Although I wonder if you couldn't slope the window
so that the outside
surface had 50% more area than the inside surface
and the width of the windo
would be at a slope.... uh kind of like the attached
gif shows. this way
the stress would be distributed over a wider area,
although the corners
would still chip after a while.
But if you want rectangular windows for asthetic
purposes, could you not put
some kind of plating to block off the bottom, top
and sides so it looks
rectangular?
