Hi, Jay - that is a bit of a strange one.
After all the calc's are done, we still have a vessel that can roll as it's
surfacing. I suppose that's an argument in favour of installing pontoons
or saddle tanks at the top of the sub rather than down below.
I haven't put a lot of thought into it, but, it
would be interesting to compare the M. heights of the various layouts - pontoons
high/low, rounded bilge, bubble sub, etc.
Magical Child will have a broad section with a flat
bottom, single hull. So, to roll or not to roll - that is where the fun
is.

height, CG, CB etc.
Rick,
Thanks for that refresher! It has been over 20 years since I have
looked at the diagrams in NA class. Metacentric height is a measure of
how stable a vessel is. A point I made that was missed, is there is a
point when bring a ship/sub out of water (as the CB drops even with or
below the CG) that it becomes very unstable and can roll. Particular
attention is paid to large ships during dry-docking at this point because they
have rolled off their blocks into the graving docks.
Small subs with landing skids should not have an issue with this but
those with a narrow keel could roll over on their trailers when pulled from
the water if not carefully secured.
Respectfully,
Jay
