RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Control Circuit for ROV

Cody,

We have fun just ribbing each other...nothing is ment in any serious way.  We are just having fun.

As with space exploration, manned vehicles are lots more expensive to build and operate. At some pont in the future, I plan on using a small tethered ROV to first explore intended dive sites. This should optimize the use of my manned sub and should make for more productive and interesting dives.

I completly agree with you on that function. how cool would it be to have say... a K350 with a mini ROV on a 150 tether for exploring inside wrecks and things? sounds fun doesnt it?

Cody,

All kidding aside, I feel that ROV's are remarkable in what can be done with them (driven into small area such as was the case in the Titanic exploration), but rather than being seen as a competition to human occupied submarines, these two technologies should be complementing each other, and be found working side by side.

Lol you guys. he sure did a good job at stiring you up:P but thanks for all the great help. i found a cable that has 6 18AWG conductors and a Cat 5e that i am probably going to use. and as far as PLC goes im going to reserve that for another project. i am going to use Gates to control the thrusters which also means i can keep the whole package alot smaller.

Cody, you might want to look at AV cable which comes with multiple wire strands and in various wire gauges.  Depending upon the depth you are going for, the larger wire may work better.  Also, I believe Alec Smyth did some PLC work for one of his subs and gave an overview at the 2003 convention.  Take a look at http://www.psubs.org/convention/2003/PLC_presentation.ppt

Hey everyone. I've been trying to put the idea of making a Mini, when i say Mini i mean as small as possible ROV together. i plan on using a PLC control circuit to make the controls easier. BUT i am having some troubles designing the wiring circuit. i plan on using 24V output voltage from the PLC to control Relay's that will control the motors. The tether i have decided to use is has 6 conductors and a Cat5e with 4 UTP's. i was planning on using 4 (2 pos 2 neg) of the conductors to power the thrusters, and another pair for a univ. bus bar for cameras, lights ect. i was wondering if anyone had the time or had something similar to this already done, and if so could they share a wireing diagram with me? i will need 1 UTP to xmit video. so that leaves 3 pairs for control. i was planning to have 2 thrusters on the outsides to provide forward/reverse and 2 thrusters providing dive functions. i can change up the wiring arrangment if someone has a better idea but as for the tether thats pretty much fixed. the only change i could make is going to 12 conductors instead of 6
